T-shirts are most popularly made of cotton or polyester fibers (or a mix of the two). In fact, polyester and cotton account for more than 85% of the global fibre market. Making the choice between cotton vs poly for your t shirt printing really depends on what you’re looking for in a shirt for your t shirt printing. Most trade industries and schools, like poly blends because they don’t want shrinkage when the shirts are washed. Poly fabrics are also wrinkle or iron free so if you hate ironing just as much as I do then poly shirts are the way to go. 100% cotton shirts will always be a cooler shirt to wear in a hot climate compared to basic polyesters (like those used in most 50/50 poly cotton blends) which don’t breathe as well as natural fibres in cotton. However, there are advanced polyesters that wick moisture and are in fact better than cotton like the Stencils’ and Australian Spirit’s range of cooldry 100% poly t shirts. Due to their higher quality, these usually cost more than your 100% cotton t shirts so consider this when you’re setting a budget for your t shirt printing. Poly t shirts will also usually hold their color better than 100% cotton t shirts and less fading (of screen printed image and the fabric itself). But if you’re looking for a great colour range for your shirts, there are more colors available in 100% cotton t shirts.
There are many methods of t shirt printing in the market today. However, the top two most popular t shirt printing methods have got to be screen printing and heat transfer printing or digital transfers. So which one do you go for, screen printing or digital transfers? Well, ultimately the t shirt printing methods used depends on what you wish to achieve from the printing job for example, the quality and the feel of the print.
Screen printing
To start the screen printing (also known as silk screening) process, your approved artwork is converted to film. Each film is used to make the screens. A screen is made of a piece of porous, finely woven fabric called mesh stretched over a frame of aluminum or wood. The screens are then coated with a photosensitive emulsion. The screens are left to dry and exposed to UV light. After being exposed, the screens are then washed out with a pressure washer. The inks are then transferred through the tiny dots in the stencil to achieve the desired print. We use high quality plastisol ink as it’s similar to rubber and is very durable. Each color in the design must be blocked, taped, setup, and squeegeed. For smaller runs, manual presses are used, for larger runs with more colors, rotary automatic presses are used. By drying the ink between each color layer, we are able to achieve bright, consistent and professional quality printing with years of durability.
As you can tell by now, this method has a high detailed setup process to ensure the best quality print. The costs of this method is mainly in the set-up process. The number of screens for any design is based on the number of colours of the design. So the more colours you have the higher the set-up costs. This method is ideal for large quantity customers looking for a professional and durable finish. It is the most convenient and economical way to mass produce t shirts.
Digital Transfer
Once your artwork is approved, your design is printed onto a special type of transfer material using a colour laser printer. The transfer material is then pressed onto the t-shirt under high temperature. If you want photo quality print, digital transfer is your answer. This method is ideal for small run customers with multicolour designs looking for a fast turnaround time. Though the materials we use are of premium quality from Italy and Japan, digital transfer prints are still less durable than screen printed designs which are directly printed onto the garments.
T shirt printing became popular since the 70s when people started thinking of new creative ways to protest the Vietname War. In recent times, celebrities and their trend setting ways with unique t shirt printing messages have further catapulted the popularity of t shirt printing. Britney Spears was the pioneer in using screen printed t shirt messages such as “I am the American Dream” and “Soon to be Mrs Ferdeline”. Since then, many celebrities have followed suit utilising the power of t shirt printing to convey powerful and controversial messages. For example, a whole host of celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Fergie, Oprah, Beyonce Knowles and Alicia Keys were spotted with printed t shirt messages such as “Vote or Die”, Obama is Progress” and “Obama for your Mama” to show their support for the Obama campaign. And as most of you junk magazine readers would know, there was also a t shirt war between Pamela Anderson, a strict vegetarian and animal activist who sported a t shirt with “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)” and Jessica Simpson who had the opposite message “Real Girls Eat Meat”.
Paris Hilton has got it, Britney Spears has got it. Have you got it? We’re talking about the ever useful screen printed t shirts. Screen printed t shirts are a great to express your own personality or communicate a brand’ s marketing message. They’re ideal for mass production runs as the cost of producing them goes down greatly. The 100% cotton screen printed t shirts are the most sought after product in the imprinted sportswear industry. T shirts are so adaptable. You can dress down with a pair of shorts or jeans. Or you can use special effects ink such as glitter ink, glow-in-the-dark ink or puffy ink in the print to add sparkle to create a trendy look. Ladies and men alike can show off their assets with fitted styles of tees. Fitted styles of tees normally cost more than unisex tees which have a square cut and are larger in size to suit the average person.
We hear it all the time, “We bought too few printed t shirts. We should have printed more. Now we need more printed within the week!”. To prevent yourself from falling into this situation, always buy printed t shirts in bulk and more than what you anticipate as sufficient. This is because printed t shirts are always going to be handy to you whether you’re a small 1-2 person business, a large corporation or a non profit organisation. There are a hundred and one ways you can use printed t shirts to market your brand name. Use them for staff, company events, fundraisers, as a gift with purchase, loyalty programs etc. Bulk buying allows you to get great prices compared to say buying 25 printed tees on one occasion, then 50 then 100 in separate orders. Also, avoid rush job charges which accrue when you fall short of t shirts and need another lot printed within the week.
